What You Should Know About Chiropractic Adjustments
Chiropractic adjustments, also known as spinal manipulation, are a common remedy for chronic back pain. When people talk about getting a "back adjustment" from their chiropractor, they mean a manual therapy to realign the spine and joints.
Common Goals:
- Pain-free, well-functioning spine
- Relief from headaches, neck and shoulder issues, hip alignment, and drug-free pain management
What Is a Subluxation?
A subluxation is a partial dislocation. Medical doctors use X-rays to detect obvious disconnections between joint bones. Chiropractors, however, identify subluxations during regular evaluations, even subtle joint position changes and soft tissue problems.
Types of Adjustments:
- Common Technique: A quick, controlled thrust into the joint to realign bones.
- Other Names: Spinal manipulation.
- Goal: Restore the joint to its natural position. This may require one or several adjustments.
- Other Adjustments: Chiropractors also adjust the pelvis, knees, feet, and wrists.
What to Expect:
- Initial Visit: The chiropractor will discuss your problem, review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and possibly use medical imaging.
- During Treatment: The chiropractor will use a controlled thrust to move the joint beyond its natural range of motion, helping to repair the subluxation.
- Frequency: Multiple visits may be needed to achieve the desired results.
